RIKEN and Fujitsu repeated history and again took first place in the TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in the world.
Since 1993, TOP500 has updated and published the relative performance ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputers every six months. Vendor-reported performance is validated by high-performance computing experts, computer scientists, manufacturers, and the wider Internet community.
The latest TOP500 list was announced at this week’s International Supercomputing Conference, dedicated to high-performance computing.
Fugaku entered the chart immediately in the first place – this officially means that the computer is the fastest in the world. Nine years ago, the K computer, also developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu, achieved the same feat, with a computing speed of more than ten PetaFLOPS.

Underscoring the continued pace of supercomputer development, Lingack Fugaku’s performance is about 40 times that of the “K computer,” and it’s more than twice as fast as the Summit system that topped the TOP500 last November.
Fugaku also took first place in the new HPCG (High Performance Conjugate Gradient), which complements the TOP500 but uses a separate set of parameters to calculate HPC performance.
